What is Stress?

Assumptions of stress

Stress is the ‘wear and tear’ conditioning of the body, which reflects physical and emotional effects altogether. It normally happens when you are worried or uncomfortable about something, leading to many disorders in your body like feeling angry, frustrated, scared or afraid and feel irritable.

It is often observed that some adjustments are needed when there is a physical, psychosocial or material change in our environment, which we could not even recognize as damaging or harmful. The way our body and mind respond to the need for adjustment is called stress. So the Assumptions of stress are considered to be both, a tense physical as well as mental condition.

Stress is the way one responds to the present changed conditions physically, mentally and emotionally which is sometimes challenging, but seems to be difficult to tackle. It is a fact that all humans suffer from stress, which is very difficult to ignore.

Types of Stress

Different individuals have different situations as stressors. The very awareness of the Stressor eliminates half of the stress. Therefore, the first step in learning to control Stress is to find out the stressors. Some of the common stressors are as under:

High stress prone professions: Security personnel, police, doctors, emergency workers, staff working under any minister, other time bound operations are obviously stressful jobs.

Ordinary high stress work: Almost all the occupations come under this category. It doesn't matter if you're an employee, taxi driver, student or businessman. All the work fields have some percentage of stress. Though people think that most of the jobs are not stressful, but actually they are.

Career related stressors: Career consciousness, examination, interview, public speaking, settling of business, training at work place, poor communication, ill-defined role, competition, power struggle etc. are career related stressors.

Socio-economic, political and environmental Stressors: Government policies, unemployment, less income compared to demands, high cost of living, technological change, pollution, poor services and filling of income tax returns.

Domestic: In everyone’s life there are unique stressful situations. In the everyday category, the biggest source of anxiety is relationships. The closer the relation, the worse stress will generally be felt. This is so particularly between spouses, parents and children. Stress from in-law’s side is equally worse. Moreover, dating adds lots of stress as well as “falling in love” causes stress resulting into health damage.

Sharing of workload, different values, different lifestyles, distribution of money/assets, illness, homesickness etc. also add to the domestic stress.

Physical Stressors: Poor health, cold, noise or person’s own illness are the main cause of stress.

Apart from above occasional types of stressors, some of which can affect us deeply and are long lasting such as:

The stress of someone dying.
The stress of a breakup of marriage, and pre, during or post-divorce stress.
The stress of retiring.
Stress of prolonged illness.
Losing money or a job, getting a lot of money is also the cause of stress.
Worrying about the economy is very stressful.

Outcomes/Signs and Symptoms

Before discussing ways to manage stress, it is very important to know what typical signs and symptoms are, when experiencing high levels of stress. Exposure to excessive or repeated stress would cause several negative effects on the person. On some people the effects will be visible immediately, whereas on others these will gradually appear as and when the stress is accumulated.

There are two kind of disease physical and mental. There are people who enjoy freedom from physical disease for a longer period. But rare ones are those who enjoy freedom from mental disease even for a moment except those who are free from mental defilements.
